Provenance

P.E. Scarisbrick, Esq.;
By whom sold, London, Christie's, 9 June 1972, lot 87.

Exhibited

Wiesbaden, Museum Wiesbaden, 5 Sammler - 5 Meinungen, 8 April - 27 May 1973.

Condition

The actual painting is darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of one piece, is bevelled along the upper edge and slightly warped at the top and bottom. The paint surface shows several dents and paint losses, of which some have been retouched. A small vertical crack is visible lower centre. Minor spots of retouching are visible throughout the sky. The paint surface is covered with an old and dirty varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light confirms abovementioned retouchings and reveals additional ones in the water and foreground. The varnish has been unevenly cleaned and impedes further UV-light inspection of the area of the cottage and foliage. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster frame, in good condition. (JD)
