The actual painting is less bright and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a wax relining. Stretcher marks are visible to the front. The paint surface is in a stable and good condition and under a dense and coarse craquelure pattern, but no damages are visible to the naked eye. The varnish is dirty and discoloured. Inspection under UV-light reveals scattered spots of retouching in the area above and around the philosopher, in his blue sleeve, hand and book, and pinpoint spots in his face; a small repaired and retouched tear upper right and one retouched damage in the books below the skull as well as a strip of retouching along the upper edge, a few scattered spots along the bottom side.
