After Sir Anthony van Dyck

The painting is a bit warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The painting has a relining. The paint layer is in very good condition, except for two small paint losses upper centre, no damages are visible. Abrasion is visible in the upper part of the breastplate and finger tops. The impastos of the lace collar and cuffs and of the red doublet are nicely preserved. A few small retouchings are visible in the face of the sitter. The paint surface is under a transparent, but somewhat discoloured varnish layer. There is a fine craquelure pattern. Inspection under UV-light confirms the aforesaid and reveals a few scattered spots in the background and along the sitter's contour; a few tiny spots in the face, a retouching in the upper breastplate and strengthening of the dark folds in the lower part of the sitter's outfit. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame, with damages and chips. (JD)
