Description

  • Cornelis Pietersz. Bega
  • A barn interior with a peasant family
  • oil on panel
  • 38.1 by 30.3 cm.

Condition

The actual painting is a bit darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of one piece and has minor bevelling along all sides. The paint layer is stable, but abraded throughout, especially in the darker tones. No damages are visible to the naked eye, except for a diagonal surface scratch (5 cm) lower left. A few spots of retouching visible in the clothing of the main figures. The paint surface is under a dirty and discoloured varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light confirms abovementioned retouchings and reveals additional ones in the background and scattered spots in the lower foreground. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster frame, no damages. (JD)
