Provenance
Anonymous sale, Berlin, Spik, 20-21 October 1971, lot 195 (as attributed to Jacob van Hulsdonck).
Condition
The actual painting is darker in tone and has less contrast in the colours than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The painting has a relining. The paint layer is somewhat flattened and thin in the green grapes and surrounding leaves. The paint surface is in stable condition and no damages are visible, but there is frame abrasion along the edges. The paint surface is under a glossy and yellowed varnish layer.
Inspection under UV-light is largely impeded by the varnish, though reveals some minor retouchings and strengthening in the blue grapes and corn and in the leaves to the left.
Offered in a decorative gilt plaster frame, in good condition.
The lot is offered with another still life (not illustrated in the catalogue) of which the canvas has been relined. The paint surface has been flattened and has several paint losses. The painting is in bad condition and under very dirty and discoloured varnish layer. Offered in a gilt wood frame, in fair condition. (JD)
