Description
- Jean-Baptiste Greuze
- A bedroom scene with a female nude and two male figures;A bedroom scene with a woman shunning a man's advances
- a pair, both oil on canvas
- each: approx. 24 by 32 cm.
Provenance
The Earl of Lonsdale;
His sale, London, Christie's, 7 March 1980, lot 151 (as by J.B. Huet)
Condition
The two paintings are a bit darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
Both canvases are relined. The paint surface is overall in good condition, a bit thin in the background, but the colours are well preserved.
A retouched damage is visible in the second painting upper right corner and a few minor spots in the background of the first painting. The paint surface is under a thick and glossy varnish layer.
Inspection under UV-light is impeded by the varnish, but the paint layers seem to be well preserved.
Offered in two decorative gilt wood frames, damaged along the corners. (JD)
