Condition

The actual painting has less contrast in the colours than the illustration suggests. The panel is consists of two planks, joined horizontally and is bevelled except for the bottom edge. The join is visible to the front. The paint surface is in good and stable condition, a few discoloured retouchings are visible in the sky and clouds. The paint layer is under a very dirty and discoloured varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light confirms the aforesaid and reveals additional minor spots of retouching in the upper half, the contours of the hills and rocks in the centre of the composition as well as in the cliffs to the right. The varnish has been unevenly cleaned, but otherwise the painting appears to be well preserved. Offered in an ornate gilt wood frame with a red inner strip, in good condition. (JD)
