Description

  • Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder
  • Portrait of a gentleman, seated half-length, wearing a green coat and holding a sheet of paper
  • oil on canvas
  • 71.5 by 58.5 cm.

Condition

The actual painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The painting is unlined. Stretcher marks are slightly visible to the front. The paint surface is a bit thin in the background, in the sitter's wig and along his face, but the impastoes of his lace cuffs and shirt are nicely preserved. There is a dense and coarse craquelure pattern. Except for some frame abrasion, there are no damages or paint losses visible. Discoloured spots of retouching are visible in the face and lower sleeve. The paint layer is under a very dirty and discoloured varnish layer, surface dirt throughout. Inspection under UV-light confirms the aforesaid and reveals a few minor scattered retouchings in the area of the sheet and stone ledge. Offered in a modern gilt frame, a few damages and chips. (JD)
