  • 36.4 by 47.7 cm.

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 16 July 1980, lot 21 (as by Jean Louis de Marne).

Condition

The actual painting is warmer in tone and has less contrast in the colours than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of one plank which is cradled. The panel has slightly warped, but is stable. The paint surface is in very good condition, no damages are visible. The varnish layer is old and discoloured. Inspection under UV-light reveals retouchings in the upper right background, one in the centre foreground and a few scattered spots lower right. The figures appear to be well preserved. Offered in a gilt plaster frame, with a few small damages and chips. (JD)
