Description
- Jan van Huysum
- A still life of roses, peonies, morning glory, a parrot tulip and other flowers, on a stone ledge, together with a snail
- oil on canvas
- 62 by 63.2 cm
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 30 November 1983, lot 101.
Condition
The painting is a bit darker in tone and the high lights are less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The paint surface has flattened somewhat and is abraded in the background flowers and leaves, otherwise the paint layer is in stable condition and no damages are visble. A few discoloured retouchings are visble to the naked eye in the right flowers. The varnish is dirty and discoloured.
Inspection under UV-light confirms the aforesaid and reveals additional minor spots of retouching in the background flowers and leaves as well as some small scattered spots in the stone ledge. The main flowers in the centre are well preserved.
Offered in a decorative gilt frame, in fair condition. (JD)
