Description

  • Joost Cornelisz. Droochsloot
  • a busy village scene with numerous figures, near a church tower
  • oil on panel
  • 64.8 by 101.7 cm.

Condition

The actual painting is a bit warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel is cradled and seems to consist of three horizontal planks. The panel is flat, and the joins are hardly visible to the front. The paint surface is stable and in good condition. Extensive retouchings and strenghtening in the sky, figures and architecture is visible to the naked eye. The varnish is slightly dirty and discoloured. Inspection under UV-light confirms the aforesaid and reveals additional retouchings and strengthening in most of the figures. Offered in a decorative gilt frame, in good condition. (JD)
