Catalogue Note
In 1881 the 18th century Castle Fürstenried near Munich was altered to become the home for the ill Prince Otto of Bavaria, brother of King Ludwig II. It was here where in 1886, after the deposition and the mysterious death of his brother, he was declared King but without ever truly reigning due to mental incompetence. Thus Otto's uncle, Prince Luitpold of Bavaria (1821-1912), continued to serve as Prince Regent as he had done before under Ludwig II. After Prince Luitpold's death in 1912, his son Ludwig (1845-1921) succeeded as the next Prince Regent.
