Good condition overall. Surface appears to have been cleaned and reconsolidated at several places, patina has been retouched. Minor chips to the edges and one chip to the tip of the collar of his coat (his right side).

Originaire de Liège, André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry fut un compositeur qui porta l'Opéra Comique à son point de perfection. On compte parmi ses oeuvres les plus importantes Richard Coeur de Lion (1784), Zémir et Azor (1771) et l'Amant jaloux (1778). Lorsque Pajou fit son portrait en terre cuite, il suscita un grand succès: "Ah ! Voilà le buste de mon ami Grétri ! Comme il est ressemblant ! M. Pajou ne l'a encore exécuté qu'en plâtre, il le fera en marbre pour le théâtre de la ville de Liège, sa patrie" (Lettre d'Artiomphile à Madame Mérard de Saint-Just, Paris, 1782, p. 33). "Chacun l'a jugé de la plus grande vérité ; l'artiste a fait passer dans cette tête toute la chaleur du sujet, et ses yeux pétillent de feu. Le sieur Grétry y semble tourmenté de cette fièvre brûlante dont il est atteint à chaque fois qu'il compose" (Moufle d'Angerville, Mémoires secrets, 4 octobre 1781, voL XVIII, 1782, p. 73).
Une version du portrait de Gretry en plâtre patiné, signé et daté de 1780 appartenait en 1912 à la collection David Weill.
