The catalogue illustration is too grey. The red chalk looks stronger. The reproduction is a little bit cut. The drawing is actually bigger. Very good overall condition. The collection mark lower right is not visible in the catalogue. Drawing sold with frame.

Catalogue Note

Il s'agit d'une étude préparatoire pour la composition du Père éternel dans sa gloire portant les instruments de la Passion peinte par Antoine Coypel pour la voûte de la chapelle du château de Versailles en 1716.

Très proche de notre dessin, une étude d'ange et angelot, également préparatoire pour le plafond de la chapelle, est conservée au musée du Louvre (voir N. Garnier, Antoine Coypel 1661-1722, Paris, 1989, no. 456, p. 222, fig. 456).
