Catalogue Note
This busy street scene depicts war veterans in their brimless caps, one blind and another in a wheeled chair with amputated hands, as street vendors and musicians trying to earn a living amidst prostitutes and regular citizens. The man in a dark suit in the foreground is carried by a mysterious character in a bowler hat, his outstretched arms mimicking those of the rat immediately to his right. As strange as this situation seems, no one on the bustling street seems to take notice or care - a symbol of the dark misdealing of German politics and the indifference paid to this regime by citizens who know better than to interfere or protest.
