Catalogue Note

Dorinda Dixon ("D.D.") Ryan moved to New York in the 1940s to pursue what would be a wildly successful career in fashion. Her first job, as an assistant for famed fashion photographer Richard Avedon, would lead her to work as an associate to acclaimed designer Halston and later serve as a photo editor at Harper's Bazaar under Diana Vreeland.  D.D. quickly became a star on the New York social scene, amassing an impressive list of acquaintances and friends including Cole Porter, Andy Warhol, Stephen Sondheim and Truman Capote. In 1954, she assisted in the costume design for the Broadway musical "House of Flowers" based on the book by Mr. Capote and later would design the costumes for Sondheim's 1970 Broadway musical "Company."
