Printed document on parchment, signed ("Andrew Johnson"), one page (19 ½ x 15 7/8 in.; 495 x 404 mm), Washington, 15 April 1865, appointing Dr. Charles S. Robert as Assistant Surgeon of Volunteers, countersigned by Edwin Stanton, Secretary of War, engraved eagle and martial symbols, blue paper seal, docketing in upper left; a few small stains and soil marks. In a leather-covered metal tube, gold-stamped "C.S. Robert, M.D., College of Physicians and Surgeons, New-York 1864." Together with: Dr. Robert's diploma from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons given at New York, 14 September 1864; clean tear in upper portion.

Signed the day of Lincoln's death.
Shot at Ford's Theatre the evening of 14 April, Lincoln was pronounced dead the next day at 7:22 AM and Andrew Johnson was sworn in. A 12-day manhunt ensued for the assassin under the direction of Edwin Stanton.
