Engraved broadside document on vellum signed ("James Madison") and countersigned by Alexander J. Dallas as acting Secretary of War,  (10 3/4 x 16 in.; 274 x 406 mm), accomplished in a clerical hand, Washington, 1 July 1815, being a brevet commission for William Piatt as Lieutenant Colonel, embossed paper seal; a few stains at the edges.

Catalogue Note

Brevet Commission for service at the Battle of New Orleans.

William Piatt (d. 1834) joined the Army in 1799, distinguished himself at the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811) where he served as Quartermaster General under William Henry Harrison, and was wounded at the Battle of New Orleans on 3 December 1814. For his distinguished service, President Madison hereby raised him in rank from Colonel to Lieutenant Colonel.
