Catalogue Note
An important association copy linking three generations of the Virginia Lees, inscribed and signed by Lee to his nephew Fitzhugh on the verso of the half-title: "To Genl Fitz Lee from his affectionate uncle, R E Lee." Lee has also made three autograph emendations to the text of his introductory "Life of General Henry Lee," correcting "Womley" to "Wormley" (p. 13); "denied" to "derived" (p. 51); and "scarcely" to "really" (p. 71). Fitzhugh read this section of the volume carefully, marking many passages in pencil.
Lee worked sporadically for several years on this edition of his father's memoirs; as Freeman noted, "In 1866 interest in the son created new interest in the sire. ... The sketch of 'Light-Horse Harry' Lee that preceded the text is the longest single composition from the pen of his most distinguished son" (Lee 4:415-17).
