Catalogue Note

As president of Washington College, Lee writes a warm letter of recommendation for a veteran who served the Confederacy from "the beginning of the War ... till the cissation of hostilities."

"Mr. William Poindexter, at the beginning of the War, inlisted the 1st Rockbridge Cav[al]ry in which he served faithfully till disabled by a wound. Upon his recovery he returned to his Comp[an]y & Continued till the cissation of hostilities. His kind & amiable disposition has procured him many friends in Lexington where he is known, & where his family has resided for several generations."
