Autograph field cover with franking signature ("R E Lee | Genl"), on a blue-ruled envelope (2 3/4 x 5 1/8 in.; 70 x 130 mm), bearing two 5-cent Confederate stamps (Scott CSA no. 6), cancelled by an indistinct Richmond datestamp (13 January 1863) in black, faint foxing at edges, tipped to a larger sheet.

An unrecorded field cover, with the rare combination of General Lee's frank and Confederate postage stamps. The envelope is addressed to the wife of one of Lee's generals:  to "Mrs. Lawton | General A. R. Lawton | near Albany | Georgia."
