Literature

Morgan & Morgan, pl. 71; This Is the American Earth, pp. 84-85; 400 Photographs, p. 123; Yosemite and the Range of Light, cover; Examples, p. 102; Classic Images, pl. 46; Yosemite: Ansel Adams, pl. 1; Ansel Adams at 100, p. 89

Condition

This photograph is in generally very good to excellent condition. In raking light the following are visible: age-appropriate silvering aroung the edges; a pencil point indentation in the upper middle quadrant that breaks the emulsion slightly; a ½-in. linear scratch in the lower right print edge that does not break the emulsion; and several small deposits of original retouching and an accretion of indeterminate substance in the lower right corner. Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career. The authors' assessment of the use dates of stamp 5 is between 1962 and 1963 and stamp 8 is 1963 to 1970. The limited overlap use of these stamps likely dates the print to circa 1963.
