Description
- Robert Frank
- 'platte river, tennessee'
signed by the photographer in ink in the margin, titled by him in pencil and with the Robert Frank Archive stamp, titled, annotated, and numbered in various unidentified hands in pencil, ink, and red crayon, on the reverse, matted, 1958, probably printed in the 1960s
Condition
This print, on double-weight paper with a slight surface sheen, is in very good condition. There are faint handling creases throughout the print, most noticeably a one-inch crescent-shaped crease in the top right corner that does not break the emulsion. Faint soiling and a thumbprint are apparent in the bottom left and right edge of the print. The corners are bumped, and there is minor edge chipping at the bottom left and middle right margin edges of the print. There are two one-inch remnants of old linen tape adhered to the top margin of the print.
On the reverse, there is a graphite-like soiling throughout.
Based upon the warm quality of the photographic paper and the range of grey tones, it is probable that this is a print from the 1960s.

Catalogue Note
In January 1960, Jack Kerouac sent the following on a postcard to Robert Frank,
'Dear Robert — That photo you sent me of a guy looking over his cow on the Platte River is to me a photo of a man recognizing his own mind's essence, no matter what — Jean ton copain' (Robert Frank: Thank You, p. 3).
