Condition

This early print, flush-mounted to card and on paper with a slight surface sheen, is in generally good to very good condition. The corners are bumped, and the edges are rubbed and show minor chipping. When examined in raking light, slight silvering and small deposits of original retouching are visible. In raking light the following also are visible: small droplets of indeterminate nature at the upper right edge and in the lower left quadrant, and several sharp creases not breaking the emulsion, predominately in the upper corners and the lower portion.

Catalogue Note

Parade/Valencia appears in Robert Frank's planned 1952 book, Black White and Things.  Spiral-bound, the book existed only as a maquette of original photographs until 1994, when it was published in conjunction with the National Gallery of Art's exhibition, Robert Frank: Moving Out.   Following Frank's original plan, the volume Black White and Things is divided into the three sections suggested by the title; Parade/Valencia appears as the first in a sequence of three  images of processions at the beginning of the book's 'Black' section.  With its selective editing and creative sequencing of a number of evocative images, Black White and Things presages Frank's seminal volume, The Americans, published in 1958.
