Description

  • Irving Penn
  • 'hell's angels (san francisco)'

Condition

As visible in the catalogue illustration, there is an area of warm-toned discoloration on the entire left side of this print, extending about 2 ½ inches into the image at its widest point in the lower left corner. The cause of this discoloration is not known, and it is unclear why it is localized in this specific area of the print. Similar discoloration has been seen in other platinum prints by Irving Penn, and while a number of photographic conservators are studying Penn's platinum work, this phenomenon is not yet fully understood. Aside from the discoloration, the print is in excellent condition. Along the left margin, adjacent to the edge of the aluminum registration tab, are some black marks of indeterminate nature. These do not affect the image.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
