Condition

This print was made at or close to the time of the negative. It was not "printed later," as stated in the catalogue. This assessment is based upon the type of paper the photograph is printed on, Brandt's careful handwork on the image in pencil, the presence of Brandt's studio stamp on the reverse, and the print's general appearance of age. This print, on single-weight paper with a surface sheen, is in generally very good condition. There are tiny deposits of original retouching throughout the print. In raking light, a ½-inch linear horizontal scratch is visible in the lower right quadrant of the image. There is slight rippling on the lower left edge of the print and the corners are lightly bumped. The top right corner is creased. There is minor edge-chipping at the lower left corner and upper right edges of the print. There is uneven yellowing on the reverse of the print - not affecting the image - most likely due to old adhesive. When examined under a black light, this print appears to fluoresce; this is consistent with photographic papers manufactured around 1956, the date of the negative of the present image.
