Description
- Edward Steichen
- the town of vaux (chateau thierry sector) after capture by u. s. troops
an 'E. J. Steichen' credit stamp and annotations in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse, matted, framed, circa 1915 (Lives in Photography, fig. 220)
Provenance
Acquired by the present owner from Lunn Gallery/Graphics International Ltd., Washington, D. C., 1970s
Condition
This early, slightly warm-toned print, on single-weight paper with a semi-glossy surface, is in generally good condition. Typically for an unmounted print of this age, the corners are bumped, and there is wear at the edges, resulting in a few chips in the emulsion, the majority of which are along the center right edge. There are 3 small, soft handling creases in the upper right corner and a crease along the lower right corner. There are scratches and nicks, as well as writing, all visible in the negative. There is a small area of discoloration, possibly an ink stain, in the upper left quadrant. Visible in raking light are various soft handling creases, none of which breaks the emulsion, and age-appropriate silvering in the dark areas, especially along the edges.
On the reverse, there is age-darkening at the periphery and a few very faint spots of discoloration. There are 2 small sections of old linen tape along the top edge. This rare print is annotated '525-' in an inidentified hand in pencil on the reverse.
The title that we use in our catalogue for this photograph is taken from a smaller print of the image in a private collection. That print is mounted, and titled in Steichen's hand on the mount.
