  • dali skull
the photographer's copyright and '33 West 67th Street, New York 23, N. Y., Endicott 2-9670' studio stamps on the reverse, matted, 1951 (Sight and Insight, p. 172; Halsman at Work, p. 94; Retrospective, p. 59; Great Photographers, p. 226)

Condition

This photograph, on double-weight, semi-glossy paper, is in generally excellent condition. In raking light, the following are visible: a few very faint handling creases and indentations in the upper right quadrant; faint silvering along the print's edges; and numerous small deposits of the photographer's original retouching overall. These are all minor and do not detract from the overall attractive appearance of this print. When viewing this print with a black light, it does not appear to fluoresce.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

It took Halsman three hours to compose this living death's head of seven nude models.  It is based on a Dali sketch.
