Description

  • Bill Brandt
  • gold cup day at ascot
signed and dated by the photographer in ink and with his credit stamp on the reverse, matted, 1933, printed in the late 1950s (The English at Home, cover and p. 28; Shadow of Light, p. 7; London in the Thirties, p. 77; The Photography of Bill Brandt, p. 56; The Art of Photography, 1839 - 1989, pl. 293)

Condition

This print, on single-weight, semi-glossy paper, is in generally very good condition. Visible in raking light are the following: a few very small handling creases; two small, linear, horizontal areas of rubbing, on the left; a 1/2-inch horizontal crease at the bottom right quadrant that has been retouched; and deposits of the photographer's original retouching. At the bottom margin corner of the print the emulsion has lifted and folded over. This does not affect the image. On the reverse, there are two strips of adhesive at the top edge. When viewed with a black light, this print appears to fluoresce.
