Description

  • André Kertész
  • ballet, n. y. c.
the photographer's '67 W. 44th St., N. Y. C.' studio stamp, a partial photo agency label, credited, titled, dated, and annotated in an unidentified hand in pencil and with reduction notations in unidentified hands in red crayon on the reverse, matted, framed, 1938 (Sixty Years, p. 176; Diary of Light, pl. 90; Greenough, pl. 84; Borhan, p. 237)

Condition

This early photograph, on single-weight paper with a glossy surface, is in generally good condition. There is wear at the edges and sharp creases in the corners. The very faint warm discoloration in the lower portion of the print is not immediately apparent. When examined in raking light, several small soft and sharp handling creases are visible. These do not appear to break the emulsion. Also in raking light, the following are visible: faint silvering in the dark areas and a small deposit of original retouching. According to Sandra Phillips in 'André Kertész: Of Paris and New York,' the stamp on the reverse of this print was used by photographer in 1938 and 1939.
