Catalogue Note
Brassaï collected graffiti from as early as the 1930s. He made some of his sentiments about graffiti brilliantly clear in an article he wrote for the famous Surrealist review Minotaure in 1933: "within spitting distance of the Opéra, the same signs appear as you see in the caves of the Dordogne or in the Nile and Euphrates valleys..."
