Catalogue Note

Das Blaue Licht (The Blue Light), 1932, was the first film directed by Leni Riefenstahl (who had already achieved recognition as a screen actress in the so-called 'mountain films' of Arnold Franck). Here, for the first time, Riefenstahl was star, director and producer. This mystical film caught the eye of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels who engaged her as a producer of films to suit their aesthetic. The tragic figure of Junta, the young lead in Das Blaue Licht, inspired Charles Chaplin to create the vagabond played by Paulette Goddard in his Modern Times (1936).
