Catalogue Note

At the beginning of August 1858, Le Gray photographed the French fleet lying at anchor in the harbours of Brest and Cherbourg. Aesthetically, the series reflects in its rigorous horizontal composition and geometric simplicity the photographs taken at Châlons. The print offered here is most appealing: a perfect composition of the ships spread over the calm, oily surface of the sea at sundown.
