Catalogue Note
Peintre d'avant-garde à ses débuts, très ami de Gauguin, Cézanne, Redon etc..., Emile Bernard participe à la création des grands courants artistiques des années 1880, le mouvement nabi, le cloisonnisme, le synthétisme et le symbolisme. Il est très impressionné par les estampes japonaises et leurs aplats de couleurs et cherche à donner une intense densité picturale à ses oeuvres.
Après 1890, il rompt avec Gauguin et son style évolue progressivement vers un art plus apaisé et plus équilibré. En 1893, il quitte la France pour l'Italie, puis pour l'Egypte où il restera dix ans.
