Condition

Overall the condition of the crane is good. There is some minor wear to the surface consistent with age. There are areas of losses to the gilding and gesso ground, particularly to the base, right foot and leg, chest, left side of the head and at the neck at the top. Joints are visible at the left side of the chest of the figure, wings, base and beak. The right wing and beak, of which the top half is possibly a replacement, are slightly loose.

Catalogue Note

The crane accompanies the female figure of Vigilance in secular allegories. This imagery was derived from Aristotle's Historia Animalium (9:10). The crane held a stone in its claw.  If the bird fell asleep, the stone dropped and would reawaken him, keeping him ever vigilant.  The present crane, with rocks at his feet, appears rudely awakened.
