Catalogue Note
These angels would originally have sat on the corners of an elaborated large altarpiece, as free standing figures surrounding central reliefs from the life of Christ and the Saints. Whilst these altarpieces proliferated across southern Europe the hairstyles with curls built up over the centre of the forehead, as well as the painted and gilded patterning on the drapery, would suggest a Spanish origin for these figures.
