Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is very good. There is some minor wear to the surface consistent with age. Areas of particular wear are at the left heel and right buttock. The joints of the right arm and club are visible and the latter is slightly loose.

Catalogue Note

The pose of this Hercules, ready to attack the legendary Hydra, is based on one of the groups from the famous silver series of Hercules' Labours made by Giambologna. As these models were replicated, the attributes and arms making the scenes identifiable were often lost. What was left in this case is a precise anatomical study of Giambologna's Hercules enlarged to an impressive scale. A large Hercules with the same pose is in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle and a similar bronze by a Northern follower, with the Hydra still in place, was sold in these rooms on the 5th of December 2007 (lot 77).
