Description

Condition
Overall the condition of the ivory is good. There is some minor wear consistent with age. Due to the veining of the material small parts have been lost particularly at the drapery between the feet and at the left side of the globe and the crescent moon. The apple at the snake's head has an addition and the snake itself has a recent chip at the right side. There are some further chips to the base. There are some traces of painting and gilding to the hair. The halo has been lost.

Catalogue Note
This representation of the Virgin Immaculata stands out in the art of Spanish ivory carving for its Baroque character. The Virgin is shown in rapture rather than in the calm state she is often represented. The crescent moon, orb and Beast at her feet are nevertheless common features in 18th century Spanish colonial ivories.
