Catalogue Note

In this fruitwood relief, the central figure of Venus is based upon a drawing or an engraving of an ancient statue of a Crouching Venus (an early hellenistic work traditionally attributed to the sculptor Doidalsas), which is transplanted and recontextualialized in a Northern landscape. The goddess's son, Cupid, is added balancing on a column behind her. Cupid's mannered pose and his facial type point back to the 16th century. This sort of reminiscences enjoyed much popularity in the artistic movement of the 'Dürer-Renaissance,' which flourished in Southern Germany, especially Nuremberg, in the 17th century.
