Catalogue Note

The decoration on the present casket, inlaid with ivory hunting scenes on the exterior and a fruitwood geometrical pattern on the inside, points to an Augsburg origin.  It was in this German city that Ulrich Baumgartner (c.1550-1652), the cabinet maker, popularized gameboards, caskets and writing cabinets designed in this fashion.
