Catalogue Note

This bracket is decorated with winged cherubs' heads at the top and an eagle at the base, framed and surrounded by scrolling foliage and roses. Most probably the bracket would originally have supported a figure of the Virgin and Child. The elaborate carving is imbued with a great sweetness in a style which would suggest a Southern Italian origin.
