Catalogue Note

The distinctly carved reeded frame, the form of the clouds and drapery, and the almond shaped eyes of the figures represented in this relief are all characteristics of the Hispano-Philippine school of ivory carvers.  Likely inspired by a European engraving, the relief was carved in a Chinese workshop, possibly in Manila, under the direct control of the Jesuits. The present ivory stands out among other Hispano-Philippine ivories in its well-preserved polychromy, intricate carving and vacillation between high and low relief.
