Catalogue Note

This extremely rare intaglio of cornelian is applied with a thus unidentified white surface (it has been suggested it may be a layer of a cooked honey substance).  The contrast of the bright orange Hellenistic-inspired figures against the milky-white background enhances the high quality of the carving and design,  The figures share stylistic similarities to the work of Valerio Belli, however the spacious composition differs from his more crowded intaglios.
