Description
- The Archangel Gabriel; The Virgin Annunciate
- a pair, both oil on panel
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The panels are very thin and reinforced with cradles. The Archangel has an unstable vertical join and a split upper right. The paint surface is raised and unstable. There is discoloured restoration to the upper right where previous loss has occurred and elsewhere a further scattering of retouchings can be seen. The varnish is discoloured. Overall the panel is in a good condition.
The Virgin is structurally similar to the Archangel with a central vertical crack and splits down from the top edge and up from the bottom. The paint surface is raised and unstable and the restoration along the join and splits is discoloured. The varnish is likewise discoloured and its removal would improve the tonality. The panel is in overall good preserved condition.
19thC gilt moulded frames-some chips."
