Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel is made up of five separate planks (four joins). There is evidence of some worm infestation. The four vertical joins are visible on the paint surface. There is discoloured restoration along these joins but no evidence of much paint loss either side. There is a scattering of restoration to the sky where paint loss has occurred and the grain of the wood is most pronounced. Also in evidence is restoration to the red dresses of the Madonna and Elizabeth, to some of the faces where the wood grain is most visible and to the thinner areas of the paint where the vertical grain can be seen. The removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the overall tonality. Moulded gilt frame, some losses."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
