"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel has been cradled and there is an unstable central vertical split The paint surface is raised and unstable in places. There has been substantial restoration to the painting in the arched top. The right hand side of the figure of Christ has been augmented along with the foreground beneath the cross where previous paint loss and abrasion has occurred. Some of the larger dark cracks in the paler areas have been reduced. Most of the other figures are in good condition. The paint surface is covered in a discoloured varnish, its removal would enhance the overall tonality."
