"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel has been crudely reinforced on the reverse. There is evidence of previous worm damage and the bottom is slightly bowed. There is one join and three horizontal splits, all unstable. There is some discoloured restoration along the join and the splits. Apart from this, and abrasions to the fly on a pear and the shadow cast by the basket, the painting is in good condition and its tonality would improve with the removal of the varnish."
