- A mountainous river landscape with herdsmen resting their goats in the foreground
- possibly signed lower right on the hut
- oil on panel
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 7 December 1994, lot 262, for £13,500, as 'Attributed to Willem van Nieulandt', where acquired by the present owner.
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The paint surface is stable but there are areas which are raised and there has been some previous restoration to paint losses in the sky. Other areas of restoration seem excessive and may just be there to reduce visible under- drawing. Removing the varnish would improve the tonality. The overall condition is good.
20thC Dark wood frame-good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. Catalogue Note
This is a relatively early work by the artist, datable to circa 1610, shortly after his return from Italy circa 1605. The painting may be compared with a similar work from this period that sold in these Rooms, 6 December 2007, lot 140, and another that sold London, Philips, 7 July 1998, lot 162.
