"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The panel has an unstable vertical crack visible to the left hand side. The paint surface is visibly unstable and paint losses can be seen. Discoloured retouchings covering previous paint losses can be seen, particularly in the background. The removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the overall tonality. Aside from the obvious paint losses the painting is in a reasonable restorable condition. 19thC painted and gilt frame-minor chips."

The composition is based on Albrecht Durer's Holy Family in the Museum Boijmans-Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, but omits the figure of St. Joseph in front of the window.
