Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas is lined. The paint surface is stable but a little raised in some areas. A horizontal strip along the bottom edge, varying in from width of 5-7cm, is re-painted; this includes the sitter's right sleeve, most of the hat and two fingers of his left hand. The blue of his jacket has been strengthened in places( the restoration has discoloured) and much of the braiding has been augmented. There is one small restoration to the background , upper right, otherwise this is in good condition. Minor restorations to the hair can be seen, the face is in good condition and the impasto of the lace cuff and cravat is well preserved. Tonal improvement from the removal of the varnish would be achieved."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
